Town of Ellettsville Submits Proposal to Strengthen Longstanding Fire and EMS Support for Bean Blossom
Ellettsville, IN, August 27, 2025 — The Town of Ellettsville has submitted a proposal to Bean Blossom Township to provide full-time fire and emergency medical services beginning in 2026. The proposal, developed in coordination with the Ellettsville Fire Department, offers a sustainable, community-centered solution to a growing public safety concern at no cost to the township for the first two years.
“For decades, Ellettsville Fire has responded to emergency calls in Stinesville and the surrounding Bean Blossom area simply as a good neighbor,” said Mike Farmer, Ellettsville Town Manager. “We’ve done so without compensation because we believe in protecting our community. But now, with the area’s volunteer fire department struggling to remain operational, it’s time for a more permanent and reliable solution.”
The proposed agreement outlines a four-year partnership:
- Years 1–2 (2026–2027): Ellettsville would provide fire and EMS services to Bean Blossom Township at no cost.
- Year 3 (2028): The Town would receive funding equivalent to what the township currently allocates to its volunteer department, $90,000.
- Year 4 (2029): Compensation would continue with a modest adjustment based on standard budget growth factors.
In exchange, Ellettsville would receive the township’s fire equipment, and would ensure 24/7 coverage, full integration with Monroe County 9-1-1 dispatch, and faster emergency response times.
“This proposal isn’t just about equipment or numbers,” said Ellettsville Fire Chief Kevin Patton. “It’s about saving lives. Right now, there’s often a 6-minute delay before we’re even called to a scene in Bean Blossom. With this agreement, Ellettsville would be the first to respond. No delays, no confusion, just immediate help when it’s needed most.”
The alternative under consideration would result in significantly higher costs to local residents: reportedly more than $900,000 annually to respond to approximately 200 calls per year. In contrast, Ellettsville’s proposal offers a reliable, cost-effective service with no immediate tax burden to township residents.
Over the past several months, town officials and fire department leadership have participated in multiple public meetings, sharing data and answering questions about long-term sustainability, safety standards, and cost comparisons.
“Ultimately, we believe this approach honors the history of service, strengthens public safety, and protects the financial interests of township residents,” said Farmer. “We’re proud to offer a plan that’s practical, fair, and grounded in partnership.”
The proposal is now in the hands of the Bean Blossom Township Trustee and will be considered as part of their 2026 service planning. In the meantime, Ellettsville Fire remains committed to responding to emergencies in the area just as it always has.
