At the Ellettsville Fire Department, our mission goes far beyond responding to emergencies. While firefighting and rescue operations remain vital parts of what we do, our broader responsibility is to protect lives and property through Community Risk Reduction (CRR).

The Ellettsville Fire Department serves the Town of Ellettsville and the unincorporated areas of Richland Township, Monroe County, Indiana. We have provided this service to the township since 1947.

Community Risk Reduction means working proactively to identify potential risks before they turn into emergencies. This includes fire safety inspections, public education programs, smoke alarm installations, pre-incident planning, and partnerships with schools, local businesses, and civic organizations. Every one of these efforts is aimed at reducing preventable injuries, property loss, and tragic outcomes. In 2023, the department established a Fire Marshal Division to carry out the responsibilities of a CRR program.

Our department believes that the safest community is one where everyone—residents, business owners, and emergency responders—works together. Through CRR, we focus on understanding local hazards, developing data-driven strategies to address them, and creating programs that fit our community’s specific needs. Whether it’s teaching fire safety to children, inspecting local businesses, ensuring homes have working smoke alarms, or helping older adults prevent falls, each initiative contributes to making the Ellettsville\Richland Township area safer for everyone.
